This was for an introspective piece from a book excerpt. The character in the story is a young boy describing his grandfather who is the best cement finisher in town. There was mention of an accident that left the grandfather with a limp. He was inside a commercial cement mixer, cleaning the walls, when someone accidentally hit the switch.

Here is the revised color palette. Although I felt it kind of bold to choose pink in the first version I like this one better. I think it gives it that summer vibe which was the season the story was set in.

This series is memorable for several reasons but mostly for the art direction given to me by D J Stout, who I knew socially. During our brief phone conversation he asked if the email he’d sent made sense (Yes) and then said “Great.” And that seemed to be the end of the conversation.I asked if he had any input re: art direction and he answered, “Have fun.” I pressed him again and asked if he had anything further. He answered, “Go nuts.” SF

so here’s a piece i did for pepsi/mountain dew. it was just a mock-up, and didn’t make the cut, but i really liked how it came out anyway:

i don’t do much digital work so this was a fun change of pace. we were supposed to draw these six characters in our own style. the idea was “new school meets old school”. so you’ve got your 1960’s-80’s figures on one side, and your more up to date characters on the other. i might start experimenting with a digital style after working on this piece. we’ll see what happens.

Pacifico wanted to make 18 custom painted VW Vans and I was lucky enough to be selected for one. My theme was surfing. Here I am trying to catch some waves.

This was my first version but I felt it looked too cartoonie.

Here’s where I went next. They let me have a lot of fun with the tattoos.

Here’s the driver side sketch. They ended up not liking the front guy and wanted him facing the other way and a bit bulkier.

Here is the finished image. Passenger side.

Driver side revised.

I told my 12th grade teacher I didn’t need to know how to type because I was an artist. She said it would still come in handy, oh, and if I continued to skip class I’d fail. She was right on both counts.

Wine label - fun, I like label design, This project was particularly enjoyable. The above illustration is not how the final product looks, but rather how I best like it. I think Picasso said something about an idea begins and then becomes something else…
